Over my life time I have searched for a path, a way, a method of living my life in tune with the natural cycles of the world and the reality I find myself in. In my early years I messed around with mind altering drugs, various forms of religions and all sorts of mystical methods, most if not all of these detours led nowhere. I turned to mainstream religion and faithfully attended church for well over two years, most people I met there were kind, considerate people that seemed to be happy, however I never really seemed to fit in? Years later I was introduced to Buddhism by a young monk whilst we travelled on a train, we talked about the middle way, compassion, understanding, but most importantly he said, 'believe nothing, investigate everything for yourself,' these words had a profound effect on me. I started to visit Buddhist monasteries studying and practicing Buddhism and considered myself an aspiring Buddhist.
For years things went really well, I found that most of the teachings of the Buddha made sense, the meditation helped and I could fit Buddhism into my lifestyle with no real problems. The only confusing bit was the various traditions, schools of Buddhism, there seemed to be contradictions? For years I paid no attention to these contradictions simply putting them down to my lack of understanding and ignorance of the subject. It was around this time I was lucky enough to attend the building of a monetary in the south of England. Some monks from Thailand had been given a run down country house and were planning to renovate it and live in it. I spent weeks and months there helping with the building, the renovation, the gardening, in exchange for teaching and training. These guys were purists and followed the words of the Buddha to the letter, it became clear to me that my knowledge of Buddhism was limited and lacking, for the next ten years or so I devoted myself to understanding the simplest of Buddhist teachings.

My tai chi master used to say that chi is nothing special, it is everywhere. Chi is an energy found wherever there is life, with practice we can sense chi moving within our bodies and learn to use it to move our bodies in a very effective way. There are rumours of tai chi masters that can influence the chi of others without even touching them.
There is no one word in the English language that can convey the meaning of chi? I can be considered as many things including air and energy but that would reflect just single aspects of its meaning. Some have used it to mean breath, some describe it as energy flowing through our meridians. Physicians use chi energy to heal others, soft school martial artists use it to increase their abilities and deepen the strength of their practice.

As we practice our form we may notice changes in the sensations in our extremities, tingling in the hands and fingers, feet and toes. We may become aware of energies moving throughout the body and sensations of full and empty moving between our upper and lower body.
To enhance this experience we need to understand inner strength, relaxation and openness. The feet and ankles need to be fully relaxed, next time you are able to watch elephants walking look at their feet and ankles you will be amazed at how sensitively they position their feet and pour their weight into them. Your feet need to be in full contact with the ground and when moving you need to peel them away from the floor and rest them back into position sensitively. All earth energy enters the body through the feet.
The relationship between the feet, ankles, knees, hips and waist is essential in providing a firm foundation to your practice. The knees should always be relaxed and slightly bent, never locked, and the hips should be open and relaxed once you begin to understand this you will begin to fully sense substantial and insubstantial. To aid you with this imagine you are always sitting in an imaginary stool that is supporting your spine. When you practice this constantly you will be able to feel the chi energy sink to your feet and eventually move up to your hands.

Our modern society encourages us to desire and want things, this seem to be a current measure of success, the bigger the car, bank balance, house, lifestyle the more successful we should be. However this may not be the case, our media is full of wealthy people who apparently have everything that openly admit they are dissatisfied with their lot.
We tend to live our lives in a familiar ways, our lives are made up of safe recognisable patterns, patterns we only risk breaking on rare occasions. Our lives are a culmination of everything we have ever wanted whether we got the things we desired or not. It is an ongoing cycle of want something, get something, hang on to something, and sometimes loose that thing.
The alternative aim to live is life without wanting, without desiring, without clinging to things, for example if I pick up a glass, I see its a glass and I put it down again, I pay it no further attention until I need a drink, it is just a glass.
